Addiction

What is addiction?

Being addicted to something means that not having/participating in it causes withdrawal symptoms which can be unpleasant. It’s easier to give into what you crave, so the cycle continues.

As the addiction continues, you may need more and more to achieve the same ‘high’ that you did in the beginning. This means addictions can quickly get out of control.

According to a 2021 YouGov poll conducted for Addiction Awareness Week, 59% of people know someone with an addiction. It could be nicotine, alcohol, gambling, solvents and even shopping, the internet or work.

An addiction can damage your work life and relationships and can lead to psychological and physical effects in the case of substance misuse.
